Over six years and roughly 400 missions in Iraq and Afghanistan she walked point, and not one person was hurt on a patrol she led. On her last one, 23 March 2012, an IED went off under her and took her front left leg. Her handler carried her to cover and stayed through surgery. She left the Corps in 2013 and went straight back to work, spending seven more years as an Amtrak Police explosives dog. In 2021 American Humane named her the Military Hero Dog of the year. Corporal Robert Conroy adopted him, smuggled him to France, and Stubby served eighteen months on the Western Front through seventeen battles. He learned to warn the trench of incoming shells and gas before the men could hear or smell them, found wounded soldiers in no man's land, and caught a German soldier mapping the lines by the seat of his pants. He was wounded twice, promoted to sergeant, decorated by General Pershing, and met three presidents. When his handler, Airman Robert Thorneburg, went down wounded, Nemo crawled on top of him and stayed there until the reaction force arrived. He went home: the first sentry dog officially retired from active service, returned to Lackland in 1967.
