He learned to warn the trench of incoming shells and gas before the men could hear or smell them, found wounded soldiers in no man's land, and caught a German soldier mapping the lines by the seat of his pants. He was wounded twice, promoted to sergeant, decorated by General Pershing, and met three presidents. His job was finding explosives. In 2010 in Afghanistan he located two fighters and several hundred pounds of explosives hidden beneath a US compound. He retired in 2012, spent his last years as a working therapy dog, and died in 2018.
