The VA Said No. So I Built Something Better.

How a Marine veteran, a border collie, and a bag of exceptional coffee became a mission to save lives.

There's a moment that changes everything. For me, it came sitting across from my VA psychologist, hearing the words: no evidence. Case closed.

I had asked about a service dog. She believed it would help. The VA disagreed.

I was a Marine infantryman. I didn't accept that.

The Dog That Saved My Life

When I came home from the Corps, I was carrying things I didn't have words for. I did everything they told me to do — the medications, the therapy, the appointments. I followed the protocol. And I kept struggling.

So in a fit of defiance, and pure Marine stubbornness, I said forget it. I'll do it myself.

I adopted a border collie with no idea what I was doing. By sheer luck I found a Navy SEAL veteran helping other vets train their own service dogs. What followed was the hardest thing I'd done since leaving the Corps — and I'd been to war.

Every day was a fight. I made mistakes constantly. I clawed for every inch of progress while battling my own mental health at the same time. There were moments — looking back now, I can admit this — where the very thing I was trying to use to save myself could have pushed me over the edge.

She didn't tip me over. She held me up.

Night after night, day after day, Venus — this incredible, undeserved gift of a dog — became the foundation under my feet when I had nothing else to stand on.

Without Venus, I would not be here.

What Comes After You Survive

When my head was finally above water, when I could breathe without fear of drowning again, I knew I couldn't keep this to myself. I hadn't even finished healing when I started asking: how do I get this for other veterans? How do I make sure no one else has to fight the system alone the way I did?

One night, the answer hit me like lightning.

Sell great coffee. Fund the mission.

Honor Guard Coffee was born.

The Plan. The Coffee. The Why.

Right now, I'm a mechanic by day and a founder by every other hour. Every hour under a hood is an hour away from Venus, and away from the program that could save someone else's life.

Rare Ground is how we close that gap.

Every month, we source a single-origin microlot coffee from a small farm somewhere in the world — traceable, limited, and exceptional. When it's gone, it's gone. No filler. No blends. Just the best coffee we can find, roasted with the same attention we bring to everything we do.

Every subscription is a direct line from a small farm to your cup — and from your cup to the mission.

Here's what reaching 1,000 subscribers makes possible, in sequence:

Step 1 — I Come Home Full Time. 1,000 subscriptions lets me leave my day job and focus entirely on building Honor Guard Coffee — and being where I need to be, with Venus, full time.

Step 2 — The Service Dog Program Launches. The Honorguard Service Dog Program launches in the Treasure Valley. Veteran-led. Built on lived experience, not a brochure. We help veterans do what the VA wouldn't help me do: train their own service dog and find their own Venus.

Step 3 — The Ranch. The Program. The Legacy. A working ranch on preserved Idaho farmland — never subdivided, never developed. A place where veterans heal through land, animals, work, and community. Housing, vocational training, service dogs, mental health support, ag therapy. Every modality that helped me, available to those who served.

Idaho land. Idaho grit. Kept whole, forever.

Be One of 1,000.

We don't need a corporation. We don't need a grant. We need 1,000 people who believe that a Marine veteran and his border collie deserve a shot at building something that will outlast all of us.

Your subscription isn't a purchase. It's a stake in the ground.

One bag of exceptional coffee a month. One step closer to a program that will save lives.
