Keurig and Reusable Pods

Direct answer. For a reusable filter, use a medium to medium-fine grind, like drip or slightly finer, never espresso-fine. Fill it level, tamp lightly, and pick the 6 oz setting. Most "watery" Keurig coffee comes from too little coffee, a grind that is too coarse, a clogged needle or scale.

The reusable-filter grind
Too coarse, and water rushes through and the cup comes out thin. Too fine, and the water backs up, overflows, or leaves silt in the cup. Medium to medium-fine, like drip grind with a bit more fineness, is the target. Grind fresh from whole bean when you can. Pre-ground coffee labeled "drip" works fine.
Fill the filter level, then press down lightly with the back of a spoon so the surface is even. Do not pack it hard. For a full walkthrough of the grind question, see the best grind for a Keurig reusable filter.
Quick fixes
- Use the smallest cup setting (6 oz) for a stronger cup.
- Clear the needles with a straightened paperclip after unplugging the machine.
- Descale regularly, especially with hard water.
- Brew a plain water cycle and measure the temperature. Below about 190°F, the machine is the problem.

FAQ
What grind should I use in a Keurig reusable filter?
Medium to medium-fine. Finer than a French press, coarser than espresso.
How much coffee goes in?
Fill the filter level. Capacity varies by model, so go by your filter, and do not overfill, because the lid needs to close.
Should I tamp the grounds?
Lightly, to level them. Packing them tightly slows water flow and can cause overflow.
Why is my Keurig coffee weak?
Usually brew size is too large, the grind is too coarse, or the needles are clogged. The deep dive above covers all of it.
Can I use whole bean?
Not directly. Grind it first. A burr grinder gives the most even result.
